Labels, RFID, and Keeping Supply Chains Moving: CYBRA on the SourceForge Podcast

Our VP of Sales and Marketing, Brian Parrillo, joined the SourceForge Podcast to talk about a part of the supply chain that rarely gets the spotlight: the label. In the episode, he explains how enterprise labeling, barcodes, and RFID connect physical products to the business systems that run warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing floors, and how CYBRA's MarkMagic and Edgefinity IoT help teams get it right.

A small label with a big job

Every step of receiving, inventory, fulfillment, and delivery depends on the information printed on a label. When that information is wrong, the costs add up fast: rejected shipments, retailer chargebacks, rework, and frustrated customers. Brian makes the case that labeling and tracking deserve far more attention than they get, because they are some of the most practical places to improve operations.

From one printer to hundreds

Labeling looks simple on a single desktop printer. It gets complicated across multiple facilities, hundreds of printers, and a different set of requirements for every carrier and retailer. Brian walks through how MarkMagic handles that scale:

  • Pulls data straight from the source. MarkMagic draws information directly from ERP, warehouse management, and order management systems.
  • Applies the right rules automatically. Predefined rules generate the correct output for each carrier, retailer, and workflow.
  • Runs where you run. Built on CYBRA's roots in IBM i, MarkMagic also supports Windows, Linux, and cloud deployments, with a longstanding integration with Manhattan Associates.
  • Puts design in your team's hands. Visual design tools let trained users update labels and business forms without writing code, cutting reliance on developers and outside vendors.

RFID that keeps goods moving

Unlike barcodes, RFID can read many tagged items at once without a direct line of sight. That makes it a natural fit for automating receiving, inventory counts, and outbound shipment checks through portals, conveyor systems, and handheld readers.

Edgefinity IoT is CYBRA's RFID platform for tracking inventory, equipment, and assets with more visibility and less manual effort. Automated shipment validation, configurable rules, and integration with existing workflows help teams catch errors before they leave the dock and avoid costly chargebacks.

Modernize without starting over

One of the episode's core messages: you don't have to replace your ERP or WMS to improve labeling and tracking. Brian explains why success starts with assessing integrations, planning the migration, and testing thoroughly before rollout.

He also shares how Brooks Brothers used MarkMagic to bring label and document design in-house, including customized packing slips with integrated shipping labels for international fulfillment.

What's next: RFID mandates and Sunrise 2027

Looking ahead, Brian points to growing retailer RFID requirements and GS1's Sunrise 2027 initiative. Both are pushing toward richer product identification, including 2D barcodes that carry more data and link consumers to online resources. Companies that prepare now will be ready to meet new requirements without disrupting operations.
