What is X12 EDI?

EDI ANSI X12 stands for stands for Electronic Data Interchange, American National Standards Institute X12. Ratified in 1981, the X12 EDI standard is used for the exchange of information electronically between businesses.

When a business sends and receives a document from another company, the X12 EDI standard is used. The standardized format is used to exchange information between trading partners that use different formats for different kinds of information. While the X12 EDI standard has more than 300 transaction standards, each subset has specific requirements for its content.
