Create a Barcode Field
The Create A New Bar Code Field dialog is used to add new bar code fields to your format. When editing an existing bar code field, an exact duplicate dialog called Edit A Bar Code Field is displayed instead.
Properties
Name and Description
- Field Name - Please see Field Names for more information.
- Browse... -
- Field # - An automatically assigned number for the field. This is an internally used number for list ordering and field identification.
- Description - If Field Name is *HEADING, the information typed here will be encoded into the bar code. If Field Name is *LINK or a normal variable field name, then the information typed here is used purely as a description for the field.
Positioning Properties
When placing a Bar code field on a format, the bottom left corner of the Bar code is treated as the origin point.
- Row - The Row or Y position on the format.
- Column - The Column or X position on the format.
Attributes
- Length - Field length. If Field Name is *HEADING, this value will match the length of information typed in Description. If the Bar code field is a variable field, this defines the maximum length of data that can be passed into the Bar code at print time. If Field Name is *LINK, then this value will be grayed out and display a total length of the fields that are being linked to on Link Fields tab.
- Decimals - Defines whether or not the field is numeric or alphanumeric. Default value of blank indicates the field is alphanumeric. Values 0-9 turn the field into a numeric only field. The integer value indicates the number of decimals. For example, a Field Length of 5 with 2 Decimals creates a numeric field with 3 whole number digits and 2 decimal places: 123.45

Bar Code Type
- Bar code Type - A pull down menu displaying all available Bar code types for the particular printer type (driver) the format is designed under.

Display
Appearance
- Human Readable - A pull down menu displaying all available human readable options for the particular bar code type. This controls the visibility and positioning of the readable text portion that bar codes typicality have.
- Alignment -
Rotation
- Rotation - Rotate the bar code field around its bottom left corner origin point.
Attributes
- Height - Defines the bar code height.
- Narrow Bar Width - The thickness of the narrow bar elements of the bar code. This value is typically defined in printer 'dots' and would affect the overall width of the bar code.
- Wide to Narrow BarRatio - The size ratio between the 'big bars' and the 'narrow bars' of the barcode. Not all bar code type support defining the Wide to Narrow BarRatio.
- Number of Columns - Define the number of columns in the bar code. This is usually associated with 2-dimensional bar codes such as PDF417 and Data Matrix.
- Number of Mils - Displays the number of 'mils' of the bar code. This is the thickness of the narrow bars in thousands of an inch. Compliance requirements usually request bar codes be defined as a certain 'mils' size.
Spool Data Position
When mapping information from an AS400 spool file, data is extracted by defining a specific line and column as the starting point for mapping. The Length value is then used to define the amount of data from that point to extract the desired spool file data.
- Spool Line - The AS400 spool file line value.
- Spool Column - The AS400 spool file column value.
Fields Linking to this Field
- Fields - Any *LINK fields that use the Bar Code field as a linked to source field will be listed here.
Settings
Characteristics
- Security Level - Sets the security level of the barcode. This is usually associated with 2-dimensional bar codes such as PDF417 and Data Matrix. For Data Matrix specifically, this value should always be set to 5.
- Check Digit - Define if a check digit should be included and which type of check digit it should be.
Field Increment
- Increment Type - If the Data field is an auto increment field, whether it should be be Ascending or Descending.
- Increment Value - Set Increment Value to a non zero value to turn a numeric Data field into an incremental field. The value entered here is the amount that the Data field will increment by when printing a quantity of labels or forms.
